Get free electricity from renewable sources

Wind turbines

The Demand Flexibility Service has been in place from 2022. This is a scheme that encourages energy suppliers to provide free or discounted electricity during high production periods. This is when there’s more electricity in the grid than what the nation is using.

Approximately 50% of the UK’s electricity is produced by renewable sources. This means that in periods of high winds or (hopefully) sunshine, the grid is overloaded with electricity. To make the most of this clean energy, suppliers are encouraged to offer cheaper electricity during these times.

How do I do it?

  1. First, you will need to have a smart meter installed.
  2. Secondly, you need to check if your supplier participates in the Demand Flexibility Service. You can find this here or on your energy supplier’s website. Every supplier will have a slightly different name for their version of this.
  3. Next, you need to sign-up through your supplier. This service is only available to those who opt-in.
  4. Once you are signed up, keep an eye on your supplier’s website or app. They will let you know what dates and time to expect your discounted electricity. It’s a good idea to enable notifications so you don’t miss out on updates.
  5. Enjoy your lower electric bills!

How do I make the most of a Demand Flexibility Service?

The main way is simply to be aware of when you will receive your free or discounted electricity and to shift your usage between those times. This could include:

  • Running multiple laundry washes
  • Batch cooking, using electrical appliances
  • Running a dehumidifier on high
  • Using smart plugs to run appliances if you are out during the flexibility period
  • Enjoy a long, hot electric shower

So, the next time a storm rolls through, just remember it could bring you cheaper bills through the wonders of renewable energy!
